Use of magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) in asthma treatment is potentially very wide - from using it as a food supplement to inhaling it as a rescue drug.

Then, it relaxes the airways' muscles and makes breathing much easier.   This often negates the need for intubation. MgSO4 has no long-term effects, so it has little value as a preventative drug.  Typical magnesium sulfate is used as rescue medication that should be administered during severe asthma attacks.

Magnesium Sulfate in Practical Use

In common practice, use of magnesium sulfate in asthma treatment is limited to trained medical personal in hospitals.  There is used as a treatment in the most severe asthma cases. It is usually used along with other medications.  It is inhaled rather than taken orally in order to get the maximum relief as quickly as possible. 

There are some doctors who promote the use of magnesium sulfate in asthma treatment as a food supplement. With it in your diet the decrease in number of asthma attacks will be undeniable, but it is by no means a "wonder pill".  Its use is somewhat limited because of its side effects and the fact that some people suffer from hyper reactiveness after being treated with MgO4.

The research over the use of magnesium sulfate in asthma treatment confirm the common practice. MgSO4 is very useful in most severe situations, when it really helps to avoid intubation, but its effects are much less spectacular when used to treat mild asthma and diminish completely when ordered for light asthma cases.

The use of magnesium sulfate in asthma treatment as a food supplement is still waiting for some more complex research to be performed. The longer-term results and side effects of taking large quantities of MgSO4 for a long time are still unknown.
