Singulair and Suicide?

In March, 2008, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified the maker of Singulair that it wanted more information and data about its use and suicide and suicidal thoughts.

The FDA has asked Merck to evaluate Singulair study data for more information about suicidality and suicide. The FDA is also reviewing its postmarketing reports of behavior/mood changes, suicidality, and suicide in patients who took Singulair.”

In a statement, Merck said its analysis of more than 11,000 patients in 40 clinical trials of Singulair found no reported suicides or suicidal thoughts or behavior.

The FDA suggested no one should go off of their medication before first talking to their doctor. Doctors should more closely monitor patients for changes in mood or behavior, especially related to suicidal thoughts.

Singulair Asthma Control

In clinical studies, Singulair improved asthma control in many patients by significantly decreasing asthma attacks, preventing daytime and night-time asthma symptoms, and reducing reliance on other asthma medicines, such as quick-relieving bronchodilators. It also allowed many patients to reduce gradually their use of inhaled steroids.

Inhaled steroids are the most commonly used drugs for long-term asthma control, but they can be difficult to use and have been associated with potential side effects, particularly at high doses and with long-term use. However, Singulair may not completely eliminate the need for inhaled or systemic corticosteroids.

Patients should not decrease or stop taking other asthma medicines unless instructed by their doctor.

Singulair is not a steroid and in clinical studies was as well-tolerated as placebo. It is available in pharmacies by as both a 10 mg tablet for adolescents and adults and a 5 mg cherry-flavoured chewable tablet for children ages six to 14.
